Lucky 13!

Hey there! Happy to be back this week with Episode #13. To me it is lucky, as I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to have these conversations and share them with you.

My feature guest this week is Cris Jacobs. Cris and I have been friends for nearly 20 years, since his time in The Bridge. They were one of my favorite bands who, in my opinion never got their just deserts. They were a fantastic band with great songs and great people. They paid their dues, worked hard, and received critical acclaim. Unfortunately, like so many bands out there, they worked and worked but never quite got up the mountain. We had them on tour, took them to Jamaica and sat-in with them many times. They still get together once a year and pack venues in Baltimore.

Now Cris has branched out on his own. He has done solo tours opening for Sturgill Simpson and Steve Winwood. He has a duo project with Ivan Neville, and his own band, The Cris Jacobs band, that recently expanded to a 5 piece. His songwriting is wonderful and his voice is one of the most soulful out there.

Our conversation really illustrates the influence parents can have on their children’s’ musical formation. His folks are dyed-in-the-wool heads and he grew up around the music, having it become and influence whether he wanted it to or not. I really think you will enjoy the conversation.

My other guest this week, RVA Fadeaway brings home the point , as well. These guys are 16 and 17 years old, and once again it is the parents “fault”. Growing up around the music of the Dead makes it impossible not to be impacted and that is the case here. Funny story about how I found them:

On of my sponsors, GRATEFUL SWEATS, was at a festival and saw them. They turned me on to them and helped me contact them. After I set up the interview, I got a message from a DSO fan that I am friends with. She wanted to tell me that one of the musicians was her son! What a small world, AND THEN….as I am interviewing him he says he grew up with the music and his first live experience with it was a DSO show. I must admit, that made made me feel great. It is so wonderful that we have fans who are influencing their children and helping pass this music along to yet another generation of fans and musicians.

I hope you enjoy listening to this one as much I as I enjoyed putting it together. We have these conversations plus Brad Sarno and I wrap up our conversation about the great Dan Healy and I spotlight legendary bluesman Lightnin’ Hopkins in the Black Music moment.
