Episode #12 May 6, 2021

Anders Beck (Greensky Bluegrass)/Andy Coe (Seattle WA)

This was a fun one to do.  I always enjoy interviewing the bluegrass guys (and gals), because it really puts into perspective how all-encompassing the Grateful Dead influence has been.  Whether from Garcia’s work in Old and In the Way or the country inspired tunes the Dead played, it seems that all of the Bluegrass players credit the Dead in some capacity.

Anders Beck gets this as well as anybody. As you will hear, he got turned on to the Dead at an early age and it literally took over his life.  It is what made him want to seek out a career in music.  His most telling statement in this conversation is saying every Bluegrass guitarist of this generation is as influenced by Jerry Garcia as much as the bluegrass players before them.  That is a bold and defining statement.

Anders had a great insight and is so talented.  The GD have had a huge influence not only on Anders, but on Greensky as a band.

Andy Coe, leader of the Andy Coe Band out of Seattle was a great hang, too. Most of the time I do not know the cover band folks I am interviewing, and Andy truly surprised me.

Here is a guy who is immensely talented, a product of one of the best music schools in the country (North Texas).  He plays with some big-time hitters, including Robert Walter’s 20th Congress and saxophonist Skerik, among others, yet it is his Grateful Dead project which brings him the most joy.  Again, a testament to the strength of this music.

Although I have always known the Dead’s influence was everywhere, talking with all of these different players from many genres has really reminded me of how impactful they have been and continue to be all across the American music scene.

Thanks for reading and your support.
